Evaluations

Kate Tomlin, a 2028 graduate, is a standout catcher with a competitive edge, high-level experience, and the pedigree of elite athleticism (following in the footsteps of her mother, a Canadian Olympic catcher at the 2000 Games). A member of Synergy, one of Canada’s premier travel teams, she thrives in her position, relishing the control and responsibility that comes with leading the defense. She has developed excellent relationships with pitchers, demonstrating her ability to communicate effectively and call games with precision. Her work ethic is second to none, constantly training with her mother to refine her catching skills, framing pitches, blocking, and throwing out runners.   Defensively, Kate is a wall behind the plate and at second base, her secondary position. Her quick reactions and relentless hustle make her a force on the infield, where she consistently fields balls cleanly, refusing to let anything get past her. This tenacity extends to her offensive game as well, where she is a power hitter, consistently reaching base and providing clutch hitting in key situations. Her ability to adapt to different pitching speeds and deliver under pressure make her a dependable asset at the plate.   Off the field, Kate is equally impressive as an honor student with a 4.0 GPA. She’ll soon be taking honors courses, displaying the same dedication to her academics as she does to her sport. As a true student of the game, she continually seeks to improve and understands the mental aspects of softball. Her competitive nature, leadership skills and disciplined training regimen, combined with her outstanding athletic lineage, make her a prime candidate for high-level softball programs looking for a driven, talented and committed student-athlete. — Susan Kemper, ScoutU Softball Scout, Susan@ScoutU.com, 604-808-5215   It has been a privilege to coach Kate this season. As a catcher, Kate embraced the leadership and responsibility that comes with being the captain of our defense. She takes command of the field with confidence, communicates effectively with her teammates, and demonstrates an exceptional understanding of the game. Her ability to manage pitchers and control the pace of play has been instrumental to our team’s success.   Kate’s mental toughness is unmatched. On multiple occasions this season, she’s caught 3+ games in a single day (often in extreme heat) without ever letting fatigue compromise her performance. Her resilience and competitive spirit are a true reflection of her character and commitment.   Offensively, Kate has been our most consistent and impactful player. She leads the team in every major offensive category and earned multiple MVP awards throughout the season, including at RMMSA’s Summer Series where she played a key role in our team’s silver medal finish. Her approach at the plate is disciplined and powerful, and she has a knack for delivering in clutch moments.   What sets Kate apart even further is her relentless work ethic. She is always the athlete who stays late after practices to take extra reps – whether it’s in the cage, behind the plate, or working on her footwork. She leads by example both on and off the field and sets the tone for our team’s culture of accountability and excellence. Kate is a standout athlete and a natural leader. I have no doubt she will continue to thrive as she progresses to the next level, and I look forward to watching her growth and continued success. — Lesley McPherson, RM Pride 2010 Coach

Message from Kate

My name is Kate Tomlin, and I am a 2028 graduate at Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. I am a 5’5”, 135-lb catcher/utility player with a 4.0 GPA and plans to pursue a degree in Sports Science at the university level.   I am a driven athlete and student who competes with intensity, discipline and pride. What sets me apart is my work ethic, leadership behind the plate, and genuine love for the game. As a catcher, I take ownership of the field. I work to keep my pitchers confident, communicate consistently, and manage the game with composure. I am mentally tough, detail-oriented and committed to continuous improvement. I show up early, stay late, and look for ways to elevate both my performance and my teammates’.   I maintain a structured training schedule that includes hitting lessons twice per week to develop consistency and power at the plate, strength & conditioning training twice per week (focused on power, speed, agility and endurance), regular catching instruction emphasizing receiving, blocking and throwing mechanics, and weekly bullpen sessions with my pitching staff to build chemistry and game management skills.   I prioritize balanced development so I can continue to become stronger, faster and more confident in every aspect of my game. In addition to softball, I am a varsity basketball PG at my school. Over the past three years, I’ve helped lead my team to 3 city championships and was named MVP each year. Basketball has strengthened my leadership, decision-making and composure under pressure – skills I bring directly to the softball field.   Academically, I am committed to excellence. I currently hold a 4.0 GPA with all grades in the 90th percentile. I have earned academic awards in English, Science, French, Math, Home Economics, Social Studies and Physical Education. I take pride in maintaining high standards in the classroom while pursuing competitive athletics. I am also a member of my school’s Athletic Leadership Program, where I volunteer to coach younger students and support school athletic events. I value contributing to my school community and leading by example.   Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me. I would welcome the opportunity to speak further and answer any questions you may have.
